Unfiltered & Inspired: The Art of Connection with Duan Kellum

The inaugural episode of Unfiltered & Inspired sets the tone for an extraordinary series, diving deep into the lives and creative journeys of artists in the Inland Empire. Hosted in an open, conversational format, this episode introduces us to Duan Kellum, a multifaceted artist and co-owner of Creative Grounds, a thriving community art studio in downtown San Bernardino. Duan’s story is not just about creating art; it’s about building connections, fostering a creative community, and turning challenges into opportunities for growth.

The Early Days: Teaching and the Call to Create

Duan’s path to becoming a full-time artist was far from linear. For over 30 years, he was an educator, teaching everything from first-grade bilingual classes to high school ethnic studies and college prep programs. His passion for learning and sharing knowledge is a thread that runs through his life, both as a teacher and as an artist. Yet, even during his years in education, Duan never stopped creating.

From a young age, Duan was hands-on, building robots out of lighter fluid cans, fixing vacuums, and constructing fences during his breaks. These early experiences shaped his approach to art: resourceful, inventive, and deeply personal. “I didn’t hate school,” Duan shares, “it just started too early for me.” Despite his unconventional relationship with traditional education, he excelled as a teacher, drawing from his creative spirit to inspire his students.

The Birth of Creative Grounds

Duan co-founded Creative Grounds to address a gap he experienced as a young artist: a lack of accessible resources and community support. Located in the heart of San Bernardino, Creative Grounds is more than a studio; it’s a hub for workshops, events, and collaborative projects. Over the past four years, the studio has become a haven for artists of all ages, offering screen printing, sculpture workshops, and a welcoming space to create and connect.

Creative Grounds is also a reflection of Duan’s belief that art should be inclusive and accessible. Many of their programs are offered at little or no cost, thanks to the studio’s dedication to finding creative funding solutions. “When I was younger, I couldn’t find any classes or resources to learn screen printing,” Duan recalls. “Now, I want to provide that for others.”

A Journey of Resilience and Growth

Duan’s story is one of resilience. From teaching himself screen printing to curating community events, his journey highlights the importance of adaptability and long-term vision. “Everything I’ve wanted, I’ve achieved,” he says. “It didn’t always happen right away, but I’ve learned to embrace long-term gratification.”

During the episode, Duan speaks candidly about the challenges artists face, from imposter syndrome to balancing creativity with the realities of running a business. He emphasizes the importance of artists learning to be businesspeople, a skill not often associated with the creative world but crucial for success.

Art as a Lifelong Passion

Duan’s creative output is as diverse as his experiences. From screen printing on unconventional surfaces like ceramics to creating intricate sculptures, he constantly pushes the boundaries of his art. His work often incorporates cultural references, blending personal experiences with broader themes. A fan of children’s books, Duan dreams of publishing his own, using their digestible format to transfer knowledge and spark imagination.

The pandemic brought new opportunities for growth. With fewer screen-printing commissions, Duan turned to painting, using it as a way to train his hand steadiness and explore new techniques. “Artists can’t stop creating,” he explains. “If I couldn’t do visual art tomorrow, I’d be playing percussion or writing poetry. It’s just who we are.”

Looking Ahead: The Future of Creative Grounds

As the episode closes, Duan shares his vision for the future. Over the next five years, he aims to expand his reach, participating in international art residencies, collaborating with artists from around the world, and continuing to grow Creative Grounds. A recent project includes building a stage at the studio, a testament to his commitment to fostering community and creativity.

Reflecting on his journey, Duan says, “This is my world, my jam. I played it safe for 31 years, and now it’s time to create.” His story is an inspiring reminder that it’s never too late to pursue your passion and that the creative journey is as much about the process as the destination.
